Upcoming Inclusive Sanitation Engagements at International Conferences

IWA will be actively participating in two major international conferences this July through its flagship Inclusive Urban Sanitation initiative: the Lagos International Water Conference and the U20 Mayoral Summit. These conferences provide essential platforms for sharing knowledge, fostering dialogue, and promoting innovative approaches to address urbanisation and sanitation challenges.

Highlights of IWA’s participation

Lagos International Water Conference (LIWAC), 5-7 July 2023 in Lagos, Nigeria

The LIWAC, organised by the Lagos State Water Regulatory Commission (LASWARCO), aims to enhance awareness, initiative, and accountability in the water and wastewater sector in the state of Lagos. The conference theme is “Accelerating Sanitation & Hygiene in a Megacity: Regulation & Innovation 2023”.

06 July

12:30 – 13:30 local time / GMT+1

As part of our commitment to inclusive urban sanitation, the IWA will conduct a technical session on City-wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) approaches, models, and practices. Join us as Florence Laker, IWA’s Inclusive Urban Sanitation Officer, delivers an insightful presentation.

U20 Mayoral Summit: Date: 7-8 July 2023 in Ahmedabad, India

The U20 Mayoral Summit, recognised as a formal Engagement Group of the G20, provides an invaluable opportunity for city leaders to come together to discuss joint priorities and present the official 2023 U20 Communiqué.  The theme of the U20 Summit is: “Building Resilient Cities for a Sustainable Future”.

08 July

10:30 – 12:30 local time / GMT+5:30

During the U20 Mayoral Summit, IWA will co-convene the event “Closing the Loop” alongside the National Faecal Sludge and Septage Management Alliance (NSSFMA), the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA), India, and the All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG). This event will focus on strategies for introducing circularity in water, sanitation, and solid waste management, emphasising sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. We are delighted to announce that Suresh Kumar Rohilla, IWA’s Programme Lead for Inclusive Urban Sanitation, will be a speaker at the session on “Advancing Circular Models in Used Water Management – Moving from Intention to Action.”

These conferences provide vital platforms for networking, knowledge exchange, and collaborative efforts towards achieving sustainable water and sanitation solutions. We encourage all interested stakeholders to join our activities and engage in meaningful discussions to address the pressing challenges facing the water sector.
